The Brief

A retail group relocating their head office needed a server room built from scratch in the new premises — a bare room with a power feed and no existing infrastructure. Their previous server room was a cupboard under the stairs with unlabelled cables and no UPS, which had caused data loss during a power cut the previous year.

Our Approach

We designed the room around a proper cold aisle/hot aisle layout, with three 42U racks, dedicated UPS on the critical equipment, and environmental monitoring alerting to temperature, humidity and power events. Every cable is labelled at both ends and recorded in the as-built documentation pack handed over at sign-off.

Cat6A patch panel and horizontal cable management
Rack-mount UPS with 15-minute runtime on critical load
Environmental monitoring unit (temperature, humidity, power)
Dedicated PDUs with remote switching per rack
In-row cooling unit for thermal management
Full labelling of all patch leads, power cables and equipment
As-built documentation pack and cable schedule

The Result

The server room was built and handed over in 4 days, with all equipment migrated from the old site over a weekend. The environmental monitoring caught a cooling unit fault within the first month — the alert was raised and the issue resolved before any equipment was affected.

The as-built documentation has already proved its value: when the client added a new server six months later, any engineer could pick up the cable schedule and know exactly where to patch.
